Ponce Inlet

Ponce Inlet is the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean in this pristine part of Florida’s central coast. Set at the southernmost tip of the peninsula that also hosts the wonderful cities of Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach and Daytona Beach Shores, it is here that the Intracoastal and all of its arterial waterways allow entrance to the vast Atlantic Ocean

If it sounds dramatic, it is only because it is. Imagine setting sail from the inlet out to the ocean as the sun rises over a distant horizon - quite a vantage point in the days of Spanish explorers, as well as today. For over 100 years, the residents of Ponce Inlet have been the guardians of this entryway and to this day keep their rich heritage alive.

Once called Mosquito Inlet, and renamed for the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, Ponce Inlet is a decidedly lovely seaside village anchored by an historic lighthouse. A source of community pride, the town has grown around this beacon that stands 175 feet tall and casts a beam 19 miles out to sea. Residents gather and enjoy each other’s company during the numerous cultural activities that center around this landmark.

Ponce Inlet’s new and impressive Community Center also serves as a venue for both civic and private events, and the Marine Science Center provides an innovative learning experience where you can discover, enjoy and appreciate the many wonders that embody the world of marine science in Volusia County.

A sleepy, bedroom town with an artist’s community feel and a flair for conjuring simpler times, Ponce Inlet attracts those seeking recreation and life at a slower pace. All the advantages of a peninsula are here, including boating on inland waterways or the open ocean, charter boat fishing, and sunbathing on unspoiled beaches with vast sea oat covered dunes. There are no souvenir or T-shirt shops.

No gas stations or grocery stores. Yes, you will find a few marinas and restaurants along the Intracoastal Waterways and a casino boat that sails through the inlet for those who like games of chance. But for the most part, Ponce is for laid-back relaxing and enjoying the water that surrounds it.

The Spanish valued Ponce Inlet for its safe harbor and passage to inland riches. It’s the same for residents today. Their wealth comes in the form of friendly neighbors, a secure and vibrant community, preservation of nature and heritage, and a laid-back, enviable lifestyle.
