A steady breeze blows in from the ocean making the air salty on a warm summer day. A mile down the wide, smooth beach, two wavy figures appear, coming steadily closer. The hard-packed sand rumbles beneath a crowd of spectators as the throaty whir of powerful engines rises to a crescendo. The Winton Bullet and the Olds Pirate speed by in a cloud of sand and seawater. It is 1903, and the car-racing legacy of Ormond Beach has just begun!

Ormond Beach is the Birthplace of Speed. But even before the first land-speed record was set here, Ormond Beach was a play land for wealthy and notable northerners. John D. Rockefeller had his second home here, and the Vanderbilts, Flaglers and Astors all recognized and valued the high quality of life found in the area.
